From first job to career path: Emily crosses into success

Emily, a proud Aboriginal woman with autism from the Yuin Mob down south, has faced a unique set of challenges in her journey toward independence. However, with the support of Scope’s Disability Employment Services (DES) program, she has found a fulfilling career and a newfound sense of independence.

After disheartening failed attempts at securing assistance through the NDIS to support her employment journey, our DES service offered another path forward for Emily. DES is funded by the Australian Government and free to those who access the service.

Emily joined the DES program two years ago. Over that time it has helped her develop her job-application skills and build her confidence to step into the working world. Emily learned how to write emails, apply for jobs, create a resume, and navigate phone calls.

Her DES team recognised Emily’s strengths from the beginning – a warm personality, strong connections to the local community, and a caring, empathetic nature.

When the Scope DES team pitched the idea of becoming a school crossing supervisor, it felt like a natural fit. Emily could work independently, stay connected to her community, and help kids – all things she valued.

Scope’s DES team supported Emily through every phase of the process, ensuring she was ready for the role. Simone Taylor, DES Business Manager, explains: “It’s a role that requires careful preparation, and we were with her the whole way.”

Emily is now a dedicated, full-time school crossing supervisor. Her role includes overseeing the crossing, ensuring it’s clear of debris, and keeping pedestrians safe. She also ensures that drivers follow road safety rules.

“I love the relaxing atmosphere and the positive attitudes of the parents and children who use the crossing. They respect my authority, and that’s all I ask of them,” Emily says proudly.
