There is Nothing More Powerful than the Right Person in the Right Job
As human beings, we all deserve to feel a sense of purpose in the world. While having purpose means different things to different people, having a job is often a major contributing factor to building a strong sense of purpose. When we look back through history the human race has always sought out work, in different forms through time, but always contributing to our reason for being and our sense of belonging and contributing.
Having a job gives structure to one’s day and encourages a daily routine. Working keeps us productive and focused, and encourages us to strive for a routine that allows for work-life balance. When we don’t have work and a reason for setting an alarm each day we miss out on the health benefits of work.
The actual work itself also contributes to our sense of purpose – building and growing skills that we receive payment for builds our sense of self-worth, and our belief in our ability to do, and keep, a job. Working also allows us to build upon our social skills, feel like we fit in, and grow our self confidence in who we are and what we value – what we do for work often contributes to the way we define ourselves and our personal identity.
There are of course the functional benefits of working, and the sense of independence that grows with having a regular pay cheque, paying bills, and having income to budget and spend the way we want to. Contributing to society is rewarding, and feeling included in society, through work, is fundamental to maintaining a strong sense of purpose. Being employed also allows us to support our family and dependants, which in itself significantly enhances our sense of purpose.
In 2015, the unemployment rate for people with disability was 10.0%, higher than the 5.3% unemployment rate for people without a disability. Given 1 in 5 Australian’s are living with a long term or permanent injury, health or other condition that affects you at work, at home or in the community, this difference in unemployment rates is unacceptable.
At atWork Australia we are working tirelessly to close this gap and to get the right people into the right job. At the heart of what we do is the belief that employment transforms lives, not only the lives of individuals, also the lives of their family and friends and the communities they live in. We all deserve to have a purpose through meaningful work. We all deserve the rewards that having a job enable.
